Several technology giants are moving towards producing their own chips to maintain the top position in the technology market and reduce production costs. After Apple, Samsung and Google, now Oppo is being added to this list. Oppo will produce it's own chips from next year to become self reliant. They will design and manufacture chips on their own.
The Chinese smartphone manufacturer has already developed image signal processors (ISPs), neural processing units (NPUs) and custom memory architecture Marisilicon X. Oppo's circuit design partner, Shangha Zheku, is working on developing its own application processor (AP). This is the type of chip, that can be used on smartphones.
Although, now the information has been officially announced, Oppo's plans to make the chip are quite early. In the meantime, they have hired former employees of two other chip manufacturers, Media Tech and Unisoc to their own companies.
According to the report, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) will manufacture the new chip through it's 6 nanometer process node and will start mass production in 2023. If Oppo chips are produced, the sub brand Realme and the subsidiary OnePlus can also use them.
Above to the application processor, Oppo is also said that, to be working on making another power-efficient chip. It could be launched in 2024. It will also be made using the 4 nanometer process node of TSMC. The chipset made on a 4 nanometer node is also said to have a 5G modem. However, it is not yet clear, whether the company will build it's own modem, or rely on third-party suppliers such as Qualcomm or Samsung.
Oppo's upcoming app processor will be used on their flagship smartphone. The company will start chip production under the pilot project next year. Through this, OPPO will examine the possibility of making new chips in improved designs every year.
